Pay close attention to what the door knocker is made of. Some manufacturers get away with making low quality zinc or pot metal castings look good for a short time using plating techniques. The problem with these is the good looks do not last. Soon the plating is chipping and pealing away and corrosion is taking over. What type of mounting is needed? Most door knockers employ either through the door mounting or surface mounting. Through the door mounting involves drilling holes through the door. The mounting hardware passes through these holes and attaches to the door knocker on the outside. On the inside decorative nuts are used to secure the door knocker to the door. Surface mounting uses screws to attach the door knocker to the door.

There really is no limit in this genre because the knocker is meant to reflect the homeowners unique personality. Installation FAQ If you are installing a new door knocker the best choice is a rear mounted knocker made from solid materials such as brass or iron. These will be more resistant to damage over time and offer a wider option of intricate designs. Rear mounting does require the door to be drilled for installation but this prevents theft of the knocker and ensures it will not fall off or break away from the door. If you are replacing an existing knocker it is important to measure the pre-existing holes and choose a new knocker carefully.

The holes being small due to smaller diameter mounting hardware is easily fixed with a drill. If the holes are to far apart or to close this is another matter. The distance between the holes is called the Bolt Center or BC dimension. There is a reason for this seemingly odd name. You want the bolt to go through the center of the hole so this is the point that you would mark the door to be drilled. The problem you run into when replacing an existing door knocker is the holes are already drilled through your door. On the outside the holes can be covered by the knocker itself but on the inside they are exposed.
